Welcome (Back) to the Jungle

THE JUNGLE WENT ONLINE in February 2000 with the goal of inspiring, entertaining, and educating players of Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000. Along the way, my best friend and fellow Jungle Guide Patrick Eibel and I played scores of games, wrote hundreds of posts, put up thousands of photos and images, and reached an untold number of people. We could not have done any of that without our Loyal Visitors and Fanboys/Fangirls, so if that’s you, thank you very much!

What you see now is the third iteration of the Jungle. The original site ran from 2000 to 2017, beginning with weekly updates, and chugging along from there. The Jungle featured its signature army, the Fighting Tigers of Veda Space Marines; extensive campaigns expertly crafted by Pat; themed army ideas; battle reports; editorials and reviews; and 40K fan fiction.

As time went by, I found that because of the outdated software and processes I was using, the act of posting material had become tedious and laborious, taking way too much time, and often with inconsistent and unappealing visual results. A change had to happen.

In 2018, I launched a new, blog-style version of the site, with easier use for me and visitors, and much better “look and feel.” The original site stayed online, and Pat and I kept posting, albeit less often than we used to. Real life had gotten very busy for us: Pat and his wife had a young son, and I began a second career as a sci-fi/fantasy novelist.

The new site continued with army writeups, batreps, and reviews. I introduced a popular series of articles about 1st Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (which is, truth be told, my favorite game).

However, earlier this year, the site became corrupted by software bugs, and crashed. The tech support at my then-hosting service was of no real help. So, moved the hosting to another provider, one that will do proper maintenance, and I am rebuilding the site.

The original site (2000-2017) is offline, but I have all the HTML files and images. I recovered what material I could from the 2018-2021 version, but not all of it survived.

So, as I said, here we are with Jungle 3.0. And what does this mean?

More frequent updates. I have more time now, as I’ve been working from home (no more commuting three hours a day), and I just published my latest novel, with no plans to start another until next year. While I can’t update weekly, like I used to when the site debuted, I will be updating more often than I had been.

New material. I’ll share with you the big changes–some of them radical–that I’m making to my armies and their background material (“fluff”). I’ll post batreps when I get a chance to play, and hopefully Pat and I can get another campaign started. I’ll also bring back my “KD&D” posts and continue them.

The best of the old Jungle. The original site had a wealth of good material, and some of it is still relevant. I’ll bring it back, tagged as “Vintage Jungle,” so that newer visitors can find it, and longtime fans can enjoy it again.
