The Tiger Roars

What's Up With the Updates?

Because some visitors have asked, I thought Iíd let you know whatís been behind the scarcity of updates recently.

Work got busier

For a while there, my job was eating my lunch, mostly because our department lost four people (out of 10) last year and it took a looooooong time (about 9 months) to replace them [Insert jokes about having to give birth to new employees here].  In the meantime, the overall workload increased, now spread out among 6 people instead of 10.  So, there were many evenings that was I mentally fried after leaving work and didnít have the energy to crank out Jungle material.  The good news is that our new hires are in place, theyíre all fast learners, and my workload has decreased.

My older daughter picked out her college

If youíve ever owned a college-bound high-school senior, then you know what your weekends are like: road trips to schools, campus tours, meet-and-greets, seminars, and sales pitches.  Weeknights are often spent calculating finances, looking up and filling out scholarship applications, and engaging your kid in lengthy discussions about what they like/dislike about each college.

It took us a while, but Beth finally decided on where she and my money will be going to for the next few years, so weíre done with all that.  Interestingly, it costs less for me to send her to a private, out-of-state school than it does to send her to an in-state public university.  But thatís life here in the Peoplesí Republic of Maryland for you.

I switched PCs

The PC that I bought back in 2005 was beginning to cough up the ghost inside its machinery, so I spent quite a while researching a replacement while ignoring my Luddite wifeís protestations that we didnít actually need a new PC (my wife, bless her soul, is the sort of person who would ask why anyone would need a calculator when one could get a perfectly good abacus for much cheaper).

Iíve never been wild about PCs, so I seriously considered getting a Mac, and spent awhile online and at the Apple store at the local mall check out what they had.  Finally, though, I decided that the benefits the Mac would give me were not worth the extra money Iíd have to shell out, so I got another PC on a sweet offer.

Switching over files was easy: switching to new software was less so.  I must shamefully admit that all these years, Iíve been doing the Jungle with Stone Age s/w (Netscape Composer, if you believe it) that was not compatible with my new OS (Windows 7).  Learning how to make and upload Jungle pages with new s/w took me awhile: despite what my wife thinks, Iím not a computer geek.  But I think I have the hang of it now.

Book writing and selling

A few months ago, I finished writing a very long (146,000 words) young adult fantasy novel and have been shopping it around to literary agents, which involves writing query letters, crafting a synopsis (which was *really* frickiní frackiní hard to keep short), re-editing the manuscript, and preparing submissions.  Iíve had requests for partial and full submissions, but no oneís committed to it yet.  In the meantime, Iíve started a new novel (about two dogs and the end of the world) and am six chapters into it.

If I had my wish, Iíd be a full-time novelist, but I donít know if that will ever happen.  Until then, Iím still trying.

Family issues

To respect the privacy of the other people involved, I will not name the issues my family has been dealing with recently.  No, thereís nothing going on thatís too heinous: no one at my house is dying of cancer, losing their job, gweeping people they ought not to be, or doing drugs.  No one is having an unwanted pregnancy, getting divorced, going to jail, or spending time in a mental institution.  Nor has anyone been abducted (by pervs or aliens), run away, or started exhibiting superhuman powers brought on by genetic mutation + puberty.

However, folks Iím related to have been and/or currently are dealing with some stuff, which I have been helping them with.  Needless to say, this eats up a fair amount of time.  Some of these issues have been resolved, some are ongoing.  Thatís really all I want to say about that.

The future

The Jungle is not going away (much to the dismay of haters everywhere) and updates will be more frequent than they have been lately.  My thanks to the people who e-mailed about the updates and to everyone for their patience and understanding.

Now, if youíll excuse me, I have another update to work onÖ.
