Counter Offensive 6: Introduction
August in Maryland is like walking into the mouth of a very large dog: hot, wet, sticky, and gross. But August in Maryland also means it’s time for Counter Offensive, held at Dream Wizards in Rockville. Like last year, I’m bringing along my older daughter, Beth, for two days of pick-up gaming. You’ll see that we’ve kept each of the army lists to about 1500 points, so that we can play lots of smaller games over the two days of CO6. Here’s what we’re bringing to this year’s dust-em-up.

Fighting Tigers of Veda (1500 points)
I have several other armies, but the Stripeypants are my oldest and largest collection, and though I currently favor my Dvergar and Kurindans, people like to see and play against the Tigers. Still smarting from my struggles against Pat in the CO6 Warm-up battle we played recently, I’ve substantially overhauled the list, and hopefully, it will do better this time.

  • Tiger of Brihaspati Zaghnal Maratha. Epistolary Librarian w/ jump pack (175 points)
  • Squad Rudra 1. Sergeant w/ power fist; seven Marines w/ bolters; one Marine w/ flamer; one Marine w/ missile launcher (195 points). Drop Pod w/ locator beacon, deathwind launcher (65 points)
  • Squad Rudra 2. Sergeant w/ power weapon; seven Marines w/ bolters; one Marine w/ flamer; one Marine w/ lascannon (195 points). Drop Pod w/ locator beacon, deathwind launcher (65 points)
  • Squad Rudra 3. Sergeant w/ power fist; seven Marines w/ bolters; one Marine w/ plasma gun; one Marine w/ missile launcher (205 points). Drop Pod w/ storm bolter (35 points)
  • Squad Puchan 1. Scout Sergeant w/ combi-flamer, melta bombs; eight Scouts w/ bolters; one Scout w/ missile launcher (165 points)
  • Squad Puchan 2. Scout Sergeant w/ combi-flamer, power weapon; nine Scouts w/ combat blades and bolt pistols (165 points)
  • Squad Kali. Sergeant w/ power fist; seven Assault Marines w/ bolt pistols and chainswords; two Assault Marines w/ flamers; all have jump packs (235 points)

Let's see how Zaghnal Maratha and his men will fare against the xenos, Traitors, and heretics, shall we?

Gone from the previous version of the list are Raja Khandar Madu (“The Redhead”), the White Tiger Land Raider, the Techmarine (who did nothing in the prior game) and the Whirlwind. The previous list tried to do a bunch of things at once and didn’t succeed in much of anything; this one gets up in your face tout de suite. The points I saved by shelving more expensive models have gone to putting more boots on the ground: a total of 5 scoring units and 61 Marines. It lacks the range and anti-tank punch of the previous list, but hopefully I can quickly get into a mass melee, where those factors aren’t so important.

AquaMarines of so-gaHan (1499 points)
Speaking of Marines, Beth started collecting them last year, and we’re ready to field a fully-painted force that accounts for about 2/3rds of her entire army.

  • Chaplain w/ plasma pistol (115 points)
  • Tactical Squad 1. Sergeant w/ power fist; seven Marines w/ bolters; one Marine w/ melta gun; one Marine w/ missile launcher (200 points). Sea Cobra transport. Counts as Razorback w/ extra armor, twin-linked lascannon (85 points)
  • Tactical Squad 2. Sergeant w/ power fist; seven Marines w/ bolters; one Marine w/ plasma gun; one Marine w/ missile launcher (205 points). Sea Cobra transport. Counts as Razorback w/ extra armor, twin-linked lascannon (85 points)
  • Scout Squad. Sergeant w/ power weapon and bolt pistol; six Scouts w/ combat blades and bolt pistols; three Scouts w/ shotguns (155 points)
  • Waterspout 1. Land Speeder w/ heavy bolter and assault cannon (90 points)
  • Waterspout 2. Land Speeder w/ heavy bolter and assault cannon (90 points)
  • The Shark. Counts as Predator w/ twin-linked lascannon and lascannon sponsons (165 points)
  • Devastator Squad. Sergeant w/ combi-plasma; four Marines w/ bolters; two Marines w/ heavy bolters; two Marines w/ missile launchers (224 points). Sea Cobra transport. Counts as Razorback w/ extra armor, twin-linked lascannon (85 points)
Beth loves missile launchers and Tornadoes, so we brought plenty of those. To beef up her anti-tank capability, we’ve included a proxied Predator and three lascannon-toting Razors (also proxied). Beth’s strategy is simple: stand back and shoot, then charge in the Chappy and the Scouts when attackers get too close.

Beth's Chaplain doesn't wear black.
YOU tell him he's out of uniform.

Dvergar Steeljacks (1502 points)
Beth isn’t the only one working on an army: I’m building a “Space Dwarf” force that uses the rules from Codex: Orks. As of this writing, I’ve only had one game with them (a resounding success), so I want to see how they perform against other foes.

  • Warspar Krom Steelshield. Counts as Warboss w/ ‘eavy armor, cybork body, bosspole, power claw (105 points)
  • Trowe. Counts as 5 Meganobz (Troops; 200 points).
  • Regulars, Squad 0. Counts as 27 Boyz w/ shootas and 3 Boyz w/ big shootas (195 points)
  • Regulars, Squad 1. Counts as Nob w/ power claw and 29 Boyz w/ slugga and choppa; all have frag grenades (245 points)
  • Cave Nomes. Counts as 24 Gretchin led by two Runtherds (92 points)
  • Flametongues. Counts as 15 Burna Boyz (225 points)
  • Marauders. Counts as Painboy and 9 Nobz w/ ‘eavy armor and big choppas; all have frag grenades (330 points)
  • Dvergar Crawler. Counts as Battlewagon w/ red paint job, armor plates, big shoota (110 points)
These are all the painted figures I have, but soon I will be doubling the size of the army (at least points-wise), adding heaps of more “Regulars.” Like any other Ork army, this one isn’t too difficult to use: point at the enemy and charge, counting on numbers and cover to weather incoming fire until hand-to-hand brutality commences. I can’t wait!

Krom Steelshield (the fellow with the red beard) and the Steeljacks will drop the hammer on anyone they face! I hope.
